Every visit runs in the same order

A recurring clean works because it follows the same path through your house every time. We start at the far end of the house and work toward the front door. Dusting comes first, from ceiling fans and shelves down to the baseboards, because dust falls. Kitchen and bathrooms come next. Floors come last, so nothing lands on a floor we already finished. The order matters more than the speed.

In the kitchen we wipe the counters and the stovetop, then the fronts of the appliances. The sink gets cleaned last, because everything else drains into it. In the bathrooms we spray the tub and shower first, then let the cleaner sit while we do the mirror and the sink. Wiping right after spraying just moves the grime around. After that the tub gets scrubbed and rinsed, and the toilet gets done inside and out.

Floors are the last thing we touch before we leave. Carpets and rugs get vacuumed first, then hard floors get vacuumed and mopped. We back out of each room so nobody steps on the wet floor. Trash gets emptied as we go. When it is done right, you walk into a house that smells clean, with no streaks on the tile or the mirrors. A streaked mirror means it was wiped with a dirty cloth.

Small messes get harder when they sit

Most of what makes a house feel dirty starts small. A film of grease settles on the stovetop and the cabinet doors next to it. Soap and body oil leave a thin layer on the shower walls. When we catch them every visit, each one wipes off in a minute. Left for a month, they harden, and then they take real scrubbing and a stronger cleaner to lift.

Dust works the same way. In a house that only gets cleaned now and then, dust sinks into the carpet and into the fabric on sofas and curtains. Every time someone walks across the room or sits down, it goes back into the air. A standing visit takes it out before it builds up. You see far less of it on dark furniture between visits.

Skipped visits show up in the same few places first. The base of the toilet and the floor behind it pick up grime fast. The track of a sliding shower door holds water and grows mildew. Neither one is hard to keep clean on a regular schedule. Both turn into a scrubbing job once they sit for a few weeks, and that time gets taken from the rest of the house.

Each season brings its own dirt inside

Winter in Massachusetts puts road salt and sand on every boot that comes through the door. Salt leaves a white crust on hardwood and tile. Sand acts like sandpaper on a floor finish. From December into March the entry floors get extra time, including the floor under each mat. A dry sweep only pushes salt around, so it comes up with a damp mop and clean water.

Spring brings mud season, and then pollen. By May a yellow film of pine and oak pollen sits on every windowsill and blows in each time a door opens. Summer adds humidity, and bathrooms without a strong fan start to grow mildew in the grout and along the caulk. On a regular schedule we catch that mildew while it is still a few dark spots.

Fall means leaves and grit on every pair of shoes, and then the heat comes on. Once the windows close, the same air moves around the house for months. Forced hot air blows dust out of the vents, and baseboard heaters collect it along their fins. We dust the vents and wipe the baseboard heater covers, so the house is not heating old dust all winter. That burnt smell on the first cold night is dust on the heater.

Your house style changes the cleaning plan

Bellingham and the towns around it have a lot of Capes and Colonials, with plenty of raised ranches and split levels mixed in. Each style puts the work in a different place. A Cape has a steep staircase and upstairs rooms with sloped ceilings, and dust settles on those slanted walls. A Colonial has a full second floor, so we carry supplies up once and work our way down. That leaves more of the visit for the cleaning itself.

Raised ranches and split levels have short sets of stairs between floors, and those stairs catch more dirt than most rooms. We vacuum each step with the hose and get into the corner along the wall. Many of these homes also have a finished lower level with a sliding door to the yard. That door brings in grass and sand all summer, so the lower level floor gets the same care as the kitchen.

Older houses in the area often have wide pine floorboards with gaps between them. Water on those floors is a problem, because it runs into the gaps and swells the edges. We clean old wood floors with a mop wrung nearly dry, and we never leave standing water. Painted trim in these houses gets a damp cloth rather than a strong spray, which can dull old paint.

We learn your home over regular visits

A standing visit gets better over the first few months, because the house stops being new to us. We learn which counters are stone and need a gentle cleaner. We find out which drain slows down and which rooms you would rather we skip. You stop explaining the house at the door, and the whole visit goes to cleaning. Small changes get noticed too, like a new drip under a sink.
