A lot of Bellingham is ranches and split-level houses from the middle of the last century, with capes mixed in on the older streets. Newer subdivisions add larger colonials with open kitchens and tall front entryways. Each type cleans differently. A split-level has short flights of stairs between floors, often carpeted, and they catch everything that comes in the door. A cape has sloped ceilings upstairs, and dust settles along the knee walls where nobody looks.

Bellingham winters leave salt on your floors

Bellingham gets a real New England winter. The roads get salt and sand from the first snow on, and a lot of driveways get the same. All of it comes inside on boots. Salt dries into a white film on hardwood and tile, and the sand scratches the floor with every step. Left there through January and February, it wears down the finish on a wood floor.

So in winter the floors near the doors get more than a quick sweep. We vacuum the grit up first, because mopping over sand just drags it across the boards. Then the salt film comes off with a damp mop, and we dry the floor so water does not sit in the seams. Entry mats get shaken out or vacuumed, and the boot tray gets wiped, since that is where the salty water pools.

The other winter problem is the heat. Many houses here run hot water baseboard heat, and those long metal covers along the walls collect dust and pet hair all season. Other houses have forced hot air, and the registers blow fine dust onto every flat surface once the windows stay shut. When the heat first comes on in the fall and the house smells a little burnt, that is usually dust cooking on the baseboards. We wipe the covers and vacuum the registers, so there is less dust to burn off next fall.

A house you just bought is rarely as clean as it looked at the showing. Once the last owners move their furniture out, you see what it was hiding.
