Wrentham has old homes and new subdivisions

Wrentham is an old farm town, and the houses still show it. Around the common and along the older roads you find colonials and capes with wide pine floorboards and small windows split into many panes. Further out, whole streets of newer colonials went up where fields used to be, with open kitchens and tall entry halls. Both kinds of house get dirty, but they hide it in different places, and a good clean starts with knowing where.

In an older house the dust lives in the gaps. Wide plank floors have seams that fill with grit, and a quick pass with a vacuum skims right over them. Old trim and deep window sills give dust far more edges to sit on. Radiators and baseboard heaters collect a gray layer underneath that nobody notices until it is thick. We run a crevice tool along the floor seams and wipe the trim by hand. The heaters get cleaned underneath and behind, where the dust actually sits.

The newer colonials have a different problem. They are big and open, with long runs of hardwood and kitchens built around a large island. Every surface is on display, so a smudge on a counter or a streak on the floor is the first thing you notice walking in. Bathrooms often have glass shower doors, and soap film builds up on glass faster than most people expect. In these houses we put extra time into the kitchen and the shower glass, because those are what you look at every day.

Wrentham's lakes and woods add cleaning work

Some Wrentham families live right on the water. Lake Pearl and Lake Archer both have houses close to the shore. Some of them started out as summer cottages before owners winterized them and moved in year round. Houses that close to a lake sit in damp air for much of the year. That moisture settles into bathrooms with small fans, and it shows up as gray spots on the grout and dark lines along the caulk.

Mildew is easy to ignore early and hard to get out later. When it first shows up on grout, it comes off with a bathroom cleaner and a stiff brush. Leave it for a season and it works down into the grout lines and under the edge of the caulk. Cleaning will lighten it then, but it may not remove it. At that point the fix is new caulk or fresh grout, and that is a job for a handyman. Regular cleaning keeps a lake house bathroom from getting that far.

Much of the rest of Wrentham is woods, from Wrentham State Forest to the back roads out toward Sheldonville. In late spring, pine and oak pollen puts a yellow film on everything. It blows in through window screens and settles on sills and dark furniture, and it rides in on shoes and dog paws. We wipe sills and ledges with a damp cloth, because a dry duster only pushes pollen back into the air. Then we vacuum the rugs by the doors, where most of it lands.

Salt and mud wear down Wrentham floors

Wrentham gets long New England winters, and the roads get salted and sanded all season. That salt comes into the house on boots. Once it dries it leaves white streaks on hardwood and a dull haze on tile. Sand does its own damage. Every grain walked across a wood floor rubs at the finish like sandpaper, and by March the path from the back door to the kitchen looks worn.

Then the snow melts and the yard turns to mud for a few weeks. Wet dirt gets tracked across the same floors that took the salt all winter. Mudrooms and front halls take the worst of it. A wet mop on its own tends to push salt around instead of lifting it. We wash hardwood with a cleaner made for wood floors and wipe the boards dry, so no white film is left behind.
