Millis is a small town with a long history, and you can see it in the houses. Near the center and along Main Street there are antique colonials and old farmhouses with wide board floors and plaster walls. Out from the center you find Capes and ranches built in the middle of the last century. The newer streets on the edges hold bigger colonials with open kitchens and several bathrooms. Each kind of house needs a different amount of time.

Older houses hold dust in places a newer house does not have. Radiators and window sills collect it. So do the gaps between wide pine boards and the trim around old doors. A quick pass with a vacuum misses most of it, and what gets stirred up lands on the furniture by the weekend. We work those spots by hand with a damp cloth and a brush, so the dust leaves the house instead of moving around it.

The newer houses in Millis are a different job. They are bigger, with more bathrooms and large open kitchens. Stainless appliances and glass shower doors show every fingerprint and water spot. Damp air and pollen reach Millis homes

Getting salt off a floor takes more than a mop and plain water. If the water is dirty, the white film comes right back as the floor dries. On wood, the mop stays damp rather than wet, because standing water is hard on old boards.

A deep clean also makes sense before a move. A house that sat empty, or one the last owners left in a hurry, is easier to clean before the boxes arrive.
